Münster's sports clubs are making a strong commitment to climate protection and rely on certified green electricity from Stadtwerke Münster. On January 1, the Stadtsportbund, the umbrella organization for its 200 member clubs, went green. This saves around 760 metric tons of CO2, which translates into approximately eight kilograms per person for the 95,000 members.
Club sports in Münster are therefore not only good for health, but also for the energy transition. Since the beginning of the year, a fixed amount has been invested in the development of renewable energies for every kilowatt hour used in floodlights, hall lighting or scoreboards. The investment obligation for label recipients is the core criterion of the Green Electricity Label. In this way, the Stadtsportbund and Stadtwerke Münster jointly supported the energy turnaround.
The issue of sustainability has long since arrived in sports, because the effects of climate change can also be felt when playing sports - whether it's kicking in heat waves on the soccer field or doing without disposable plastic at competitions. That's why the city sports association has a special working group dedicated to important climate protection topics such as energy efficiency, resource conservation and mobility. It was also from this group that the initiative came to take a further step toward climate protection and sustainability by switching to green electricity from the municipal utility. This example proves that climate protection is possible in all areas of life and that switching to green electricity is an effective and quick contribution.
