The Workers' Welfare Association (AWO) is one of the largest associations in the non-statutory welfare sector that helps to tackle social problems and tasks. Throughout Germany, the AWO maintains more than 18,000 facilities and services, such as homes, day care centers, counseling centers and outpatient services.
As with other independent social institutions, many AWO homes are under enormous cost pressure. This also means that energy procurement must be implemented as cost-effectively as possible. This mostly involves climate-damaging electricity tariffs from fossil fuels. To change this, the purchase of genuine green electricity must be anchored as a principle in the financing of social work.
In view of the federal decision on climate neutrality, AWO and Grüner Strom Label e.V. are now working together, because together climate protection in social work can succeed. By switching to green electricity, the emissions of facilities and services can be significantly reduced. The CO2 emissions per care place are reduced by 10 to 15 percent through the purchase of electricity from renewable energy sources.
The core argument of the cooperation is that the demonstrable environmental benefit of purchasing green electricity must be guaranteed. This is guaranteed by the Green Electricity Label: The green electricity label of the environmental associations ensures through its demanding certification that electricity providers invest in energy transition projects, such as photovoltaic plants, wind farms or energy efficiency measures. In this way, AWO facilities and services not only receive transparent access to effective green electricity products, but also possible funding for their energy transition measures.
Institutions that want to become active can apply to the AWO-Bundesverband for funding. All AWO organizations or their societies are eligible to apply, provided that they can prove that they are customers of a green electricity tariff certified by the Green Electricity Label at the time of application or that they will switch to this tariff as soon as possible. Photovoltaic systems (with supplementary optional measures), electric charging stations and individual projects in the development cooperation of AWO International e.V. are funded.
