3rd Municipal Utility Day of the Grüner Strom Label e.V.
On May 9, 2019, the Stadtwerketag of Grüner Strom Label e.V. took place for the third time.
For one afternoon in Fulda, nearly 30 representatives of regional municipal utilities, energy service providers as well as environmental organizations discussed renewable energy topics and projects from a regional perspective. The focal points of the event are:
- From the region for the region: Promotion cycle of the Grüner Strom-Label
- End of subsidies according to EEG: Prospects for plant operators and municipal utilities
- Power2Gas for grid stabilization: Pilot project of the Haßfurt public utility company
- From biowaste to energy source: High-quality biomethane from the region
- Future-oriented energy solutions for urban neighborhoods: Housing, energy and transport in the smart quarter
In the evening, a get-together for informal exchange took place.
The Stadtwerketag was mainly aimed at representatives of the energy industry such as (regional) energy suppliers, citizens' energy cooperatives or energy service providers.
The organizer was Grüner Strom Label e.V.,
The host and cooperation partner was RhönEnergie Fulda GmbH.
"We must tackle together!" - A review
Starting with an interactive workshop and exciting discussions, continuing with four insightful presentations and ending with intensive networking - the third municipal utility day of Grüner Strom Label e.V. offered the participants plenty of room for exchange and a successful platform for the energy transition.
But from the beginning...
In the premises of the information center of RhönEnergie Fulda, the pin boards and flip charts were set up early in the morning - on the agenda was a workshop for Green Electricity label holders and interested energy providers as well as presentations on the two eco-energy labels Green Gas and Green Electricity.
How does the certification work and what do I have to consider as a label recipient?
These and many other questions could be discussed this morning and also a further development of the criteria of the Green Electricity Label was a main topic within the workshop. The participants were not able to sit back and relax, however; after a short time, sticky dots were distributed - these finally all landed safely on the flipcharts and clarified the viewpoints of the participants on various issues.
Interactivity was a priority at the workshop - participants discussed new criteria for the Green Electricity Label, among other things.
The flipcharts did not remain empty and clarified the points of view of the participants
Municipal Utility Day 2019
After a short breather during the lunch break, the main event of the day followed. Around 35 representatives of regional municipal utilities and energy service providers had traveled to Fulda to exchange information about the latest developments in the energy sector and to take away impulses for their own work from the vivid presentations of the speakers.
Christian Knops, Head of Communication and Green Gas Certification at Grüner Strom Label e.V., opened the Stadtwerketag. Martin Heun then welcomed the participants on behalf of RhönEnergie Fulda GmbH, which hosted this year's Stadtwerketag.
"We are contributing locally to the energy transition."

After the welcome, presentations followed in the afternoon on the topics, funding cycle of the Green Electricity Label, end of funding according to EEG, Power2Gas, biomethane and future-oriented energy solutions for urban quarters.
Daniel Craffonara, Managing Director of Grüner Strom Label e.V., began his presentation on the funding cycle of the Green Electricity Label by addressing the connection between species extinction and climate change:
"We should think energy transition and biodiversity together and integrate nature conservation and species protection into renewable energy development."
Furthermore, he explained the necessity of reliable green electricity seals of approval - as represented by the Green Electricity Label - and presented funding projects that have been supported by the funds of the Green Electricity Label. To this Craffonara summarized: "Good projects on the ground must be supported!"
The event was also primarily aimed at networking and exchange. Therefore, the first lecture was followed by a casual get-to-know-you round, where the participants had the opportunity to meet interesting interlocutors and to exchange ideas during the following coffee break.
"If you were giving a talk today, what would be the title?"
These and other questions quickly broke the ice and provided exciting insights into the projects and working worlds of the various participants.
"The participant with the furthest journey starts the performance" - Getting to know each other and networking in a relaxed atmosphere
After the coffee break, Norbert Zösch, Managing Director of Stadtwerk Hassfurt GmbH, started the afternoon with a presentation on Power2Gas.
One of the projects that Zösch highlighted in his presentation was the Power2Gas plant of the Haßfurt municipal utility. The project was launched in 2016 under the motto "From wind to hydrogen" together with Greenpeace Energy and the Haßfurt municipal utility.
Wind gas plants like this one in Hassfurt are an important building block for a successful energy transition: They make renewable energies storable in the long term and thus ensure security of supply even with high shares of fluctuating energies in the electricity mix.

Joachim Hadeler, Generation / Energy Procurement RhönEnergie Fulda GmbH, also presented new business areas and project ideas for municipal utilities and plant operators - this with a focus on the end of subsidies under the EEG.
Hadeler emphasized that photovoltaic systems in particular will be the "playing field" for municipal utilities.
"There are many prospects for plant operators, municipal utilities can be solution providers and open up new business areas."

In the further course of the lecture series, Uwe Günter Sauerwein, managing director of Biothan GmbH, explained how garden waste and food leftovers can be turned into efficient energy suppliers.
"Regional disposal becomes regional supply."
For example, the biogas park produces enough bio natural gas to supply about 2,400 four-person households with renewable heat; this corresponds to about three percent of the households in the district of Fulda.
The participants were astonished when they were shown a photo in the presentation showing how much carelessly disposed of waste there is in the biowaste that serves as an energy raw material for the plant - including even football-sized stones and scrap metal, poison for the agitators and transport mechanisms of the plant.
Sauerwein concluded his exciting talk by saying, "All beginnings are difficult, but someone has to start."
Uwe Günter Sauerwein, Managing Director of Biothan GmbH, explains the origins and functionality of Biothan GmbH's biogas park.
Maximilian Zino Decker from Mainova AG also showed a further beginning. Decker works in the area of market innovations and business field development and spoke about future-oriented energy solutions for urban quarters.
He presented the "Quarter of the Future," on this he says: "With the climate-efficient design of urban quarters, the electricity, heat and mobility sectors can be influenced."
These solutions for neighborhoods can consist of e-mobility, efficient electricity storage and own energy generation, among other things.
In his presentation, Decker also spoke out in favor of making more use of the potential in cities. There are specific challenges in cities, but also a high potential for smart energy solutions. For example, there are currently only 1,000 photovoltaic systems in the city of Frankfurt am Main, but at least 50,000 roof surfaces would be suitable for installations.
Maximilian Zino Decker explained how potentials in cities can be used sensibly in his presentation on urban quarters
The common thread throughout the afternoon was clearly the conviction that we must "tackle" together to advance the energy transition and make a difference on the ground.
However, this movement is by no means possible alone, but requires a strong network and new ideas and impulses - the Stadtwerketag of the Grüner Strom Label e.V. was certainly a meaningful and important impetus for this movement.
After the end of the official part of the Stadtwerketag, interested participants had the opportunity to take part in a tour of the tracked photovoltaic system and the power generator of RhönEnergie Fulda.
Despite the exciting impressions, at some point the stomachs were rumbling and the Stadtwerketag ended with a get-together. One or the other glass of 'Pilgerstoff' from the Hochstift brewery, which is operated with green electricity certified by the Green Electricity Label, was also tasted.
All in all, it was an absolutely sensible and progressive day for the energy turnaround!
After the event, the participants were amazed by the huge turbine of the power generator
The large photovoltaic system was a special eye-catcher during the tour
