n Germany, the last three nuclear power plants will be shut down on December 31, 2022. Science and the RE industry agree that the ambitious transformation towards a sufficient supply of renewable energies and balancing options such as load management, storage or power-to-X solutions can be implemented under the right political framework conditions.

However, voices in society, the media and, in some cases, in politics are raising concerns. This is why AEE, together with other actors, has launched the nuclear phase-out campaign "renewable instead of nuclear" to provide energy transition supporters with strong arguments and formats for exchanging views with those who have reservations, and to clarify the functionality of a "renewable electricity system".

Nuclear energy as an unacceptable threat to the environment and health

The IPPNW as the supporting association of the Grüner Strom Label e.V. (German section of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War e.V.) demands the complete phase-out of nuclear energy, as it represents an unacceptable danger to the environment and health:

  • uranium mining, which is necessary for the operation of nuclear power plants, contaminates the habitats of millions of people
  • Nuclear disaster risk
  • Increased cancer rates of residents and staff even during normal operation.
  • Risk of proliferation of nuclear technology for military use
  • Unsolved problems of nuclear power plant dismantling and nuclear waste storage

Instead of large power plants in the hands of a few energy companies, IPPNW calls for a decentralized energy supply in the hands of citizens based on 100 percent renewable energy generation, energy efficiency measures and energy conservation.

The solution - high-quality green electricity

Consumers can turn their backs on nuclear energy by consciously choosing a green electricity tariff. However, not all green electricity is the same, and what it says is not always what it gets. Many offerers lure consumers*innen with favorable current tariffs, which are to be besides still öko. However, these are often only green-washed coal and nuclear power products.

Green electricity seals such as the Green Electricity Label create transparency in the tariff jungle and provide consumers with security when choosing a really good green electricity tariff.
