The transport sector is responsible for around a fifth of CO₂ emissions in Germany every year (source: Federal Environmental Agency). It is therefore no coincidence that the transport transition is one of the three key pillars of the energy transition alongside the heating and electricity transition. However, it is not so easy to find solutions that really do justice to everyone, especially when it comes to passenger transportation. After all, the demands on the mobility of the future are high: it must get us from A to B flexibly and safely, be socially acceptable and offer reliable solutions not only in the city but also in the countryside.
These challenges are also Merlin Jonack from NABU,
who we welcomed to our episode as an expert on the topic of the transport transition. Merlin explains to us the demands that future transportation will have to meet according to one of Germany's largest environmental associations. But he can also give us hope: Finding common solutions is not always easy, but it can start on a small scale. If you want to know why, for example, it can make a difference to greet your bus drivers, you'll find it in this episode.
From A to B together
Another piece of good news is that a lot is happening in the transport sector in particular. New ideas are constantly emerging that could make a contribution to advancing the transport transition. The investment commitments of the Green Electricity and Green Gas labels have also already co-financed projects that aim to make a difference in the area of mobility. These include co-funding for Green Moves, a subsidiary of energy provider naturstrom, which has been offering certified green electricity for many years.
Green Moves offers mobility solutions for local authorities and private individuals. Some of you may already be familiar with their bike-sharing services. For our episode, we spoke to Ernst Raupach, the managing director of Green MovesWe talked to you about why sharing concepts in particular can be attractive for the transport transition. We also included questions from the community, which you can send us via Instagram have communicated.
The right electricity for e-mobility
A special feature of Green Moves is that its e-bikes and cargo bikes are not only powered by the normal electricity mix, but also by green electricity that carries the Grüner Strom-Label. This means that a fixed amount per kilowatt hour of green electricity consumed is guaranteed to flow back into energy transition projects. This means that e-drives can have a clear climate advantage over vehicles powered by fossil fuels. Find out more about the climate benefits of different types of electricity in the podcast! Who also would like to know why it is not always easy to find out about e-cars and e-bikes. to find the right infrastructure, should listen in!
Don't despair, dare a change in transportation
If there's one thing we've taken away from this episode, it's that the transport transition is certainly not an easy topic, but it's not an unsolvable problem either. On the contrary: a successful traffic turnaround could even bring many other benefits. It could have a positive impact on our health and safety, it could solve space problems in the city and reduce the need for second and third cars in the countryside.
If you want to find out more about the topic, you'll find it in our podcast. And if some terms don't mean that much to you yet - don't worry, we'll pick you up with the basics! You can find our podcast and the latest episode "Sharing is Caring: Is sharing the future of the transport revolution?" on all popular platforms. We will keep you informed about new episodes here and via our social media channels. If that's not enough energy transition for you, you can also listen to our last episode in which we, together with Alexander Steinfeldt from co2online, addressed the issue of sustainable heating.
