ECO-ELECTRICITY AND BIOGAS: MANY ECO-TARIFFS DO NOT CARE ABOUT NATURE COMPATIBILITY

Grüner Strom Label e.V. launches dialog forum on nature-compatible energy transition at the interface between energy industry, nature conservation associations and citizens / Public online survey runs until September

Bonn, July 6, 2017: Consumers who purchase green electricity or biogas want to contribute to environmental protection. However, most tariffs are not recommendable from an environmental point of view: they do not create any added value for the nature-friendly design of the energy transition. By contrast, tariffs with the Green Electricity and Green Gas ecolabels have high environmental requirements. With the new Dialogforum Naturverträgliche Energiewende, Grüner Strom Label e.V. now offers an interface for the exchange of information between different interest groups. The findings will also be incorporated into the further development of the labels.

"Our goal is an ecologically, economically and socially just energy transition," says Dr. Werner Neumann, board member of Grüner Strom Label e.V. and spokesman for the energy working group of the Bund für Umwelt- und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND). "By cooperating with energy suppliers and our sponsors such as BUND, Deutscher Naturschutzring and NABU, as well as through direct contact with consumers, we want to provide impetus for constructive dialog and an environmentally compatible, citizen-oriented expansion of renewable energies."

Part of the Dialogforum Naturverträgliche Energiewende is an online survey: Participants can, among other things, indicate experiences with renewable energy plants in their own environment and comment on the importance of social, economic and ecological aspects in the context of a sustainable energy transition. The aim of the survey is to gain a better understanding of the perspectives of various stakeholder groups, such as the energy industry, climate and nature conservation organizations, and citizens.

Until the end of September, anyone interested is invited to participate in the public survey. At the same time, expert discussions will be held with representatives of various stakeholder groups. The findings of the online survey will be published at the end of 2017 and will be incorporated into the association's future work - including the further development of the Green Electricity and Green Gas energy labels. Energy suppliers can have their green electricity or biogas tariffs labeled with the seals of approval. "Energy products that bear one of our seals of approval are regularly checked," explains Rosa Hemmers, chairwoman of Grüner Strom Label e.V. "This ensures that they meet the demanding criteria of the environmental associations. This way, consumers can be sure that they are adding real value to the nature-friendly energy transition." About Grüner Strom Label e.V. The Grüner Strom Label e.V. certifies green energy products. The association awards two seals of approval for this purpose: the Green Electricity Label for green electricity with added value and the Green Gas Label for environmentally compatible biogas. The association is backed by seven non-profit environmental and consumer associations and peace organizations. The Green Electricity and Green Gas labels are the only quality seals for green electricity and biogas in Germany that are supported by leading environmental associations.
