Green electricity products that have been awarded the Green Electricity label must undergo a regular review, usually every two years. The relevant energy supplier must provide evidence of compliance with the Green Electricity criteria for this period. All this information is summarized and evaluated in an expert report. Finally, on this basis, a decision is made on renewed certification with the Green Electricity Label - until the next assessment.
An important basic principle of this Green Electricity certification process is that the expert opinions are checked, validated, by an external institute. This is the only way to ensure independent certification.
For the years 2017 and 2018, Grüner Strom Label e.V. commissions GUT Certifizierungsgesellschaft für Managementsysteme mbH with the validation of the expert opinions. GUTcert checks whether the expert opinions and the submitted documents of the Green Electricity Label recipients are compatible with the Green Electricity Label criteria catalog. These are two core criteria in particular:
- The supply of 100 percent genuine green power - with coupling of power purchase and guarantees of origin from the same green power plant.
- The promotion of energy transition projects with a fixed amount per kilowatt hour of green electricity sold. The subsidies are intended to promote the environmentally compatible expansion of renewable energies and to encourage innovative measures. The aim is to achieve a one-hundred-percent supply of renewable energies.
These criteria set the Green Electricity Label apart from other green electricity labels: independent market observers repeatedly confirm the high quality standards of the Green Electricity Label. For example, the Lower Saxony Consumer Center, which in a detailed market check only rated the Green Electricity Label with the top mark 'highly recommendable'. The recognized shopping guides ÖKO-TEST and Nachhaltiger Warenkorb also come to similar conclusions.
