The free afternoon event was divided into a lecture and a workshop block. After the welcome by moderator Ute Lange, Daniel Werner, Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, shed light on the global energy transition and its demands on European and international development cooperation.
Subsequently, Dr. Benjamin Schraven, German Development Institute (DIE), took up the topic of economic refugees / climate refugees. He vividly explained the difficulties in defining and dealing with the terms. He also cleared up statistics and projections often quoted in the media and explained their backgrounds.
Is a socially and environmentally compatible energy transition possible, and if so, how? Christian Knops, Grüner Strom Label e.V., and Dr. Tim Loppe, NATURSTROM AG, described the area of tension between the energy industry, nature conservation and citizens' concerns. Initial results of an online survey were presented and practical examples for a responsible energy transition were given.
At the end of the presentation block, Michaela Cavanagh, Deutsche Welle, took on the question of how the influence of fake news on climate and energy debates, is demonstrable and measurable. You can find the exciting presentation here.
In the workshop, the participants had the opportunity to discuss with experts and with each other at four topic tables, equivalent to the presentation topics.
Around 6 pm, the official side event to COP23 ended after exciting presentations and intensive discussion rounds.
