Bonn, April 12, 2024: A total of 210 green electricity tariffs have been awarded the Grüner Strom-Label after the end of the 2023 certification period. 37 energy suppliers throughout Germany rely on the leading green electricity label of the environmental associations. The Grüner Strom-Label guarantees that these tariffs are 100% genuine green electricity and that investments are also being made in the energy transition. All certificates have been validated by the independent certification body GUTcert and the board of the Green Electricity Label Association.
"The completion of Green Electricity Certification 2023 shows once again that more and more energy suppliers and electricity customers are opting for genuine green electricity," says Chairman of the Board Dietmar Oeliger (NABU). "Every kilowatt hour of green electricity-certified green electricity accelerates the necessary energy transition and makes us less dependent on energy imports. Green electricity with the Grüner Strom-Label leads to more added value in Germany through the construction of wind and solar generation plants and at the same time reduces greenhouse gas emissions. A win-win situation for our country."
New green electricity tariffs with the Grüner Strom-Label on the market
The energy suppliers Stadtwerke Gifhorn, Stadtwerke Bad Windsheim, ENTEGA and ProEngeno successfully underwent the demanding green electricity certification test procedure for the first time in 2023. In addition to green electricity tariffs from these four providers, there are new, newly certified green electricity tariffs on the market: Since July 2023, Stadtwerke Bad Hersfeld has been offering the "Hersfeld Strom Online Natur" tariff, which has carried the Grüner Strom-Label since the beginning. Stadtwerke Kelheim offers two certified green electricity tariffs that are especially suitable for heat pumps. There are also new certified green electricity tariffs on the market in 2024: Stadtwerke Konstanz now offers the "SeeEnergie ÖkostromHeimat" green electricity tariff, which primarily comes from a PV system installed on a noise barrier in Allensbach. Since 2024, the Düsseldorf-based green electricity provider Naturwerke has been offering genuine green electricity with added value: The "Naturstrom Premium" tariff also bears the environmental associations' seal of approval.
Every kilowatt hour counts: How the Grüner Strom-Label supports the expansion of renewables
The core criterion of green electricity certification is that the electricity providers support the energy transition with a fixed amount per kilowatt hour consumed. The guaranteed investments flow into various sectors, such as the expansion of renewable energies, the mobility transition, energy infrastructure, energy efficiency and other projects that support the energy transition, such as nature conservation, development cooperation and education. Since 1999, more than 1,900 energy transition projects have been funded with over 96 million euros through the Green Electricity and Green Gas labels. Co-financing with this funding has triggered total investments of an estimated 580 million euros in innovative energy transition projects. As this is mostly partial funding, the funds actually invested are around 5.5 times higher. Selected energy transition projects are here .
