Did you know that the generation curves of a photovoltaic system in Germany coincide perfectly with the consumption periods of a care facility? There's a lot to learn in the latest episode of Strom Aufwärts, because AWO is taking advantage of hidden opportunities, especially in the field of care, and is taking a decisive step forward in climate protection. In the July issue on climate protection and social work, we looked at how Arbeiterwohlfahrt is cooperating with Grüner Strom Label e.V. to make its properties greener. Finally, we wanted to know more and asked Steffen Lembke for a podcast interview.
Keeping your own goals in mind
Steffen Lembke not only sees practical advantages in the implementation of climate protection measures in the AWO facilities. He is also concerned with the goals and values of the AWO, which have grown out of the self-image of the labor movement. The goal in care is always to enable people to have a better quality of life. This, he said, cannot be realized, especially in the future, without an active commitment to stopping the climate crisis. Heat waves are already a frequent phenomenon in Germany, hitting particularly hard those social groups that are more vulnerable anyway. In recent years, elderly residents of care facilities in particular have experienced firsthand what needs to be prevented.
Agenda 2030 as a portfolio of opportunities
The AWO's five core values (freedom, equality, justice, solidarity and tolerance) are also used by the association as a reason to commit to more sustainability and link them directly to the United Nations' 2030 Agenda, also known as the "Sustainable Development Goals" (SDGs). A dedicated website presents commonalities between individual SDGs and exemplary projects from the association's own working practice in which these are already being implemented.
Everyone is talking about the nursing sector as understaffed and poorly financed. It is hard to imagine that ambitious goals for more sustainability will find favor here.
