The aim of Grüner Strom Label e.V. is to increase participation and acceptance of the energy transition through citizen-led projects. Since January 2015, the Grüner Strom Label has offered special funding opportunities - not only for projects of citizens' energy cooperatives, but also for their foundation. This is intended to promote a decentralized energy transition. A new study by the trend:research institute shows how important citizen energy is for the energy turnaround: private individuals own just under a third of the installed capacity for sustainable electricity production in Germany.
The basis for acceptance and commitment to the expansion of renewable energies depends on the participation and investment opportunities of citizens, according to the Managing Director Philipp Vohrer of the Agency for Renewable Energies. Through the participation of the population, renewable energies receive the necessary local support. This is essential for the further dynamic expansion of renewable energies in Germany.
A successful example of civic engagement is the Köllertal Citizens' Energy Cooperative. Not only its foundation, but also several energy projects were supported and implemented by Green Electricity funds.
