Bonn/Nürtingen, 19.11.2010. Promoting energy transition and biodiversity through green electricity - that is the concept of Bienenstrom. To counteract insect mortality, customers finance the cultivation of species-rich flowering areas throughout Germany through their energy consumption. The green electricity product of Stadtwerke Nürtingen was awarded by the Grüner Strom Label e.V. association. From January 2021, Bienenstrom will meet the certification criteria for green electricity of the environmental associations.
"Green electricity, which has been proven to contribute to the expansion of renewable energies, is an important building block for the energy turnaround," explains Dietmar Oeliger, chairman of Grüner Strom Label e.V. and NABU's representative in the association. He continues: "In addition, bee power promotes biodiversity in our fields. All this is regularly checked and guaranteed by the Grüner Strom-Label. This is how real green electricity works."
Through the blooming aid contribution of 1 cent, Bienenstrom promotes new habitat for bees, other insects and wildlife. After the eco-gas product Bienenwärme was awarded the Grünes Gas-Label this spring, its big brother Bienenstrom now also carries a label from environmental associations with the Grüner Strom-Label. The label guarantees the supply of 100% genuine green electricity from renewable sources. Existing Bienenstrom customers will then automatically receive the ecologically higher-quality green electricity.
Thanks to the blooming aid contribution, more than 480,000 square meters of arable land will be brought into bloom next year. In cooperation with biogas farmers, insect-unfriendly pure crops such as corn are replaced by wild plant mixtures. These can be used like other substrate in the biogas plant. The resulting loss of yield compared to the utilization of corn substrate is compensated by the flowering aid contributions of the bee power customers. This pioneering combination of nature and species conservation and environmentally compatible production of biogas is also regularly audited by the Grüner Strom-Label.
