Bonn/Hamburg, November 26, 2020: Greenpeace Energy will have its entire gas portfolio certified with the Grünes Gas-Label as of January 1, 2021. From the beginning of the year, existing customers will also receive ten percent biogas produced in an environmentally friendly manner. The Grünes Gas-Label is the only biogas seal in Germany that verifies the ecological quality of biogas at all processing stages - from substrate production and biogas production to delivery to end customers*.
To ensure the ecological quality of the biogas, Greenpeace Energy has its biogas tariffs tested annually by Grüner Strom Label e.V.. "By being certified with the Grünes Gas-Label, we have our own claims tested by an independent body," explains Nils Müller, board member at Greenpeace Energy eG. "The award proves once again to our customers that our green gas products meet the highest environmental standards, which are supported not only by Greenpeace, but also by the other major environmental associations."
"Our criteria for the Grünes Gas-Label are supported by six environmental and consumer associations as well as peace organizations," says Dietmar Oeliger, chairman of Grüner Strom Label e.V. "The label thus represents a broad civil society consensus for the production of environmentally compatible biogas." In addition, biogas plants must use regional and decentralized production and distribution structures, which strengthens the regional circular economy. "So there is a lot in common between Greenpeace Energy and Grüner Strom Label e.V.," sums up Oeliger, who also represents Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU) in the association.
Greenpeace Energy's 30,000 customers are supplied with biogas from five plants. Only biogenic residues are used for its production. They come from sugar beet production or municipal biowaste. For 2021, the green energy provider expects gas sales of over 460 gigawatt hours (GWh). In addition to 50 GWh of environmentally compatible biogas, this also includes 5 GWh of green hydrogen. Hydrogen is produced in five electrolysis plants using surplus green electricity from wind turbines and fed into the gas grid. This "wind gas" has already been an integral part of the gas mix offered by Greenpeace Energy since 2014.
