Bonn/Itzehoe, June 21, 2022. Prokon has had its entire gas portfolio certified with the Green Gas Label since June 1, 2022. The Green Gas Label is the only biogas seal in Germany that verifies the ecological quality of biogas at all processing stages - from substrate production and biogas production to delivery to the end customer.
"When launching a gas product, it was very important for us to meet the strict criteria of Green Gas with our product and to have the environmental associations on our side," says Frank Kalliora, head of the energy trading department at Prokon. He is pleased with the addition of sustainable biogas to the energy cooperative's product range. "It fits perfectly with our mission as a sustainable producer and supplier of green energy."
"We are pleased that our biogas label now honors the tariffs of a movement as strong as Prokon's," says Christian Knops, head of green gas certification at Grüner Strom Label e.V. "Prokon is one of the pioneers of cooperative action in the energy industry. This fits well with the first biogas label in Germany. Among other things, we are united by our tireless commitment to a sustainable and ecological energy future characterized by stakeholder diversity. And that's what we're doing together from now on."
The energy cooperative has been offering two gas products since the turn of the year: Prokon Biogas 10 and Prokon Biogas 100. Both products will carry the "Green Gas" label. In the medium term, Prokon plans to build its own biogas plants. A product made from hydrogen is also already being planned.
For both products, Prokon is currently procuring conventional, fully climate-neutral compensated natural gas instead of green gas-capable biomethane under certain conditions for a limited period. The background to this is a law on the further development of the greenhouse gas reduction quota in the fuel sector, which will come into force in early summer 2021. Furthermore, the uncertain supply situation and the associated price speculation on the gas markets in the wake of the war in Ukraine is leading to a strong incentive to buy biogas/biomethane. The increased demand means that covering the demand for Green Gas-certified biogas is currently partly impossible or unreasonable in terms of price.
Avoidance certificates are used to make Prokon's gas climate-neutral and to promote the expansion of wind energy in India. In addition, Prokon also promotes energy transition projects with a fixed amount per kilowatt hour according to the criteria of Grünes Strom Label e.V. This fits in with Prokon's history and mission: the expansion of wind energy and the promotion of the energy transition.
