Energy Transition Forum 2017 | Frankfurt (Main)

A REVIEW

Energy Transition Forum 2017 of the Grüner Strom Label e.V.

October 19 and 20, 2017 | Frankfurt (Main)

4th Energy Transition Forum of Grüner Strom Label e.V.

Nature sustainability, digitization and participation

"The energy transition is a necessity for global climate protection and an essential step towards transformation. It is imperative for a sustainable model of society and a response to numerous crises," said Florian Schöne, Secretary General of the environmental umbrella organization Deutscher Naturschutzring (DNR), in his keynote speech at the 4th Energy Transition Forum of Grüner Strom Label e.V.

On November 19 and 20, around 80 participants from the energy industry, environmental protection and nature conservation, public institutions, and research and development came together in Frankfurt am Main. In the rooms of Mainova AG, there was lively discussion about current topics of the energy transition. The focus of the conference this year was:

  • Nature-compatible energy transition: Renewable energy generation, nature conservation and citizen
  • Digitization and decentralized energy transition: Smart meter rollout, networking and blockchain
  • Participation in the energy transition: Tenant power and crowdfunding for energy transition projects

The detailed program for the Energy Transition Forum can be found at here as PDF.

Florian Schöne

Secretary General Deutscher Naturschutzring e.V. (DNR)

"The energy transition is a necessity for global climate protection and an essential step toward transformation. It is imperative for a sustainable model of society and a response to numerous crises. In addition to a climate protection law, we call for the halving of energy production from coal and oil. 'Efficiency First' must also be enshrined as a guiding principle, whether in energy generation and consumption or in the building sector. An enormous amount also needs to happen in the transport sector for decarbonization - keyword clean electrification."

The event was opened by Dr. Werner Neumann, spokesman for the Energy Working Group of BUND e.V. and board member of Grüner Strom Label e.V.

As host, Cordelia Müller from Mainova welcomed the participants before Marlies Gandor from Deutsche Kreditbank, content and financial partner of the event, and Paul Fay from the energy department of the city of Frankfurt am Main addressed the guests.

After the key note by Florian Schöne, DNR, Sebastian Schäfer, NATURSTROM AG, explained the most important mechanisms and findings of the first tender rounds for wind energy and photovoltaic expansion. He clearly pointed out legal loopholes that allow companies, for example, to gain competitive advantages under the guise of citizens' energy cooperatives.

Franziska Tucci, Fachagentur Windenergie an Land e.V., then explained the framework conditions and various implementation options for wind turbines in forest areas. Dr. Christian Chudoba, Lumenaza GmbH, then spoke on digitalization and intelligent networking in the energy industry and made clear the importance of smart metering, networking and compatibility of interfaces.

Cordelia Müller from Mainova welcomes the nearly 70 participants to the 4th Energy Transition Forum in Frankfurt am Main.

Dr. Werner Neumann, spokesman of the energy working group at BUND and member of the board of Grüner Strom Label e.V., led through the morning and moderated a topic forum.

This laid the foundation for the following three thematic forums, which took place in parallel in the afternoon:

Topic forum 1

Transport turnaround and the role of electromobility

At Topic forum 1 The focus of the 3rd 'Dialogforum Naturverträgliche Energiewende' was the ecologically, economically and socially just energy transition. Kathrin Ammermann from the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation gave an overview of the current state of research and debate on the nature-compatible energy transition and the role of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation in this context. Already here, the different positions of the energy industry, environmental protection and nature conservation became clear. Exciting discussions developed.

Henrike Schröter from wpd onshore GmbH & Co. KG presented the Lauterstein wind farm as a good-practice example and showed how stakeholders with different views can work together in a consensual manner.

Afterwards, small groups discussed further aspects for a successful energy transition: Besides nature compatibility, practicable standards of new wind turbines were discussed and the design of an energy transition on site was considered.

Kathrin Ammermann from the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation will present the current state of research on the nature-compatible energy transition in the 1st thematic forum.

In the following workshop, the participants of the 1st thematic forum discuss in different small groups about nature compatibility of the energy transition and its design on site.

In the afternoon, three parallel themed forums took place

Dialogue forum on nature-compatible energy transition, digitalization and decentralized energy transition, participation in the energy transition

Topic forum 2

Tobias Ruof, Trianel GmbH, introduced with his input 'Digitalization and Decentralized Energy Turnaround' the eponymous Topic forum 2 and moderated it. Afterwards, Dr. Ole Langniß, OLI Systems GmbH, gave the participants an insight into the innovative possibilities of blockchain in the energy industry.

Björn Böttger from WEMAG AG spoke about the smart meter rollout and the opportunities for sales, a topic that is currently a concern for energy suppliers against the backdrop of the legally required rollout.

In the subsequent workshop, discussions were held on 'Digitization as an opportunity for energy companies', 'Smart meter rollout' and 'Blockchain as an opportunity for the energy transition'. The methodology of the world café was used: The participants grouped themselves at three corresponding topic tables. After a certain amount of time, each group moved to a different table and was informed about the status of the discussion. In this way, all forum visitors were able to exchange views on the various areas.

Topic Forum 2 of the 4th Energy Transition Forum: Dr. Ole Langniß, OLI Systems, talks about the blockchain approach in the energy industry.

Digitalization as an opportunity for utilities, smart meter rollout and blockchain as an opportunity for the energy transition were the topics of the subsequent world café workshop.

Topic forum 3

'Participation in the energy transition'.

At 3. theme forum Participation in the energy transition' dealt with the financing of energy transition projects from different perspectives and tenant electricity models of Mainova: Marlies Gandor from DKB, Martina Kürig, GLS Bank and Markus Merzbach, KfW, described the possibilities of financing energy transition projects from different perspectives. Bodo Becker of Mainova AG explained the new Tenant Electricity Act and implications for tenant electricity models.

In the subsequent workshop, the participants worked together on concepts of how financing and project implementation can be implemented against the background of fair participation. In concrete terms, the framework conditions for tenant electricity models were used.

Financing energy transition projects from different perspectives: Martina Kürig, GLS Bank, presents one view in the 3rd thematic forum.

How can funding and project implementation be implemented against the background of equitable participation? A central question in the subsequent workshop.

Conclusion of the event

At the end of the event, Rosa Hemmers, board member of EUROSOLAR e.V. and Grüner Strom Label e.V., summarized the day once again and introduced the subsequent get-together. Not only during the evening reception and lunch, but also on the tour of the biomass power plant Fechenheim the following morning, the participants took the opportunity to talk among themselves and also with speakers and organizers and to make new contacts.

We would like to thank Mainova and Deutsche Kreditbank for a successful 4th Energy Transition Forum 2017.

Energiewende2Go Event: Electricity Market

The price of electricity is at a historically high level. This is primarily due to the war in Ukraine and the lack of gas supplies from Russia. However, the price increase also affects those who have been purchasing electricity from renewable energies for years.
