The year 2020 was dominated by the Corona pandemic. A crisis that directly and immediately affects everyone worldwide. This is an unprecedented development in recent history. Much more slowly and unevenly distributed, the climate crisis is progressing. Structurally, however, the corona and climate crises are similar: while they affect everyone, it is the weakest, poorest and most vulnerable in particular who suffer the most.
We can only solve both crises by acting in solidarity worldwide: on the one hand, through global cooperation on vaccines, respirators and green reconstruction aid, and on the other hand, through the decarbonization of energy supply, mobility and industry. Grüner Strom Label e.V. has been working toward the latter goal since its founding in 1998. Our vision: a 100 % renewable energy supply in all sectors and at all levels - nature-compatible, decentralized, citizen-oriented, public welfare-oriented, fair and pollutant-free.
With this activity report, we are now putting our vision into a global context for the first time and placing our work in the context of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. How can we summarize the association's work over the past year? In 2020, more green electricity was sold with Grüner Strom-Label than ever before. Sales of biogas at Grünes Gas-Label have also more than quadrupled since the label was created. On January 1, 2020, we launched our Instagram channel to get younger audiences excited about the energy transition.
Since fall, we have been offering consumers a transparent overview of all certified green electricity and biogas tariffs with the tariff comparison portal of the environmental associations "vergleich-dich-gruen.de", completely free of advertising and commission. Finally, at the end of the year, we completed the revision of the Green Electricity Criteria Catalog with a great deal of vigor and with the intensive involvement of stakeholders and, among other things, adopted the coal phase-out by the end of 2026.
