Smart energy supply and sector coupling are two central topics at the 5th Energy Transition Forum on 18.09.2018 in Bonn. At Stadtwerke Bonn, the second thematic forum on the afternoon of the conference will provide insights into the modern and smart energy world in which the various sectors are growing together.

At the beginning of the thematic forum, Tobias Jaletzky, Managing Director at EUROSOLAR e.V., will give a classification of the topics smartness and sector coupling. EUROSOLAR calls on politicians to say goodbye to the energy market based on coal and nuclear power. Instead, a new market order must be established, which places renewable energies at the center and thus takes into account the convergence of the previously separate energy markets. According to EUROSOLAR, such a new energy market order (called NEMO) requires a revised EEG that combines the electricity, heat and mobility markets. The EEG is still an indispensable and central legal basis for a fast and successful energy transition. However, EUROSOLAR is very critical of the reforms of recent years, as they have led to unnecessary bureaucracy. The German government must therefore make the EEG less bureaucratic and revoke the practice of tendering in order to make the EEG a reliable and effective energy transition law again.

Climate road, GrowSmarter and successful battery storage systems

Christian Ramcly from RheinEnergie AG will explain the approach and some subprojects of the SmartCity Cologne' initiative present. SmartCity Cologne is a joint project of companies, associations, private individuals and public authorities in Cologne who are committed to the sustainable and conscious use of energy. More than 30 sub-projects and events have already been implemented as part of SmartCity Cologne. Christian Ramcly will focus in particular on the subprojects Climate Road and GrowSmarter that are in the areas of e-mobility, efficiency and smart energy supply. The approach of the climate street is to show what a SmartCity can look like. Various energy projects are being implemented in Neusser Straße. For example, SmartHome applications have been installed in private apartments and a bookstore to test savings possibilities in everyday life. With SmartHome, it is possible to save an average of 7 percent of energy and heating costs through intelligent networking and communication. In the GrowSmarter sub-project, the Stegerwaldsiedlung is being renovated for energy efficiency with funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 program. Photovoltaic systems on the roofs of the settlement will produce electricity for the residents. Furthermore, the residents will be able to monitor their individual energy consumption with the help of digital electricity meters. The aim of GrowSmarter is to intelligently link smart components with one another and thus create a holistic overall concept against the backdrop of sector coupling.

Finally, Tobias Struck, Head of Energy Storage and Projects at WEMAG AG, will provide insights into the use of battery storage. In recent years, WEMAG AG has been very successful in the development and operation of battery storage systems. Such storage technologies are central to the energy transition and the 100 percent switch to renewable energies, as they can compensate for sinks in electricity production, for example when solar radiation is absent. The two Schwerin 1 and Schwerin 2 power plants with a total of 53,444 lithium-ion batteries in 215 battery cabinets have already been running trouble-free, low-maintenance and economically profitable since 2014 and 2017.

The Energy Transition Forum 2018

The Energy Transition Forum 2018 of Grüner Strom Label e.V. will take place on September 18 at Stadtwerke Bonn (SWB Energie und Wasser). The EnergyAgency.NRW with the umbrella brand Electromobility NRW could be won as a further cooperation partner.
After introductory presentations in the morning, there will be three parallel thematic forums in the afternoon. In the evening, there will also be an evening reception to mark our 20th anniversary. The focal points of this year's Energy Transition Forum are:

  • E-mobility and traffic turnaround
  • Smart energy supply and sector coupling
  • Decentralized energy transition and post-2020 concepts

The event is aimed at representatives of the energy industry, civil society actors, industrial and commercial customers, representatives of public institutions.
