Bonn/Hamburg, February 04, 2021. Promoting the energy transition locally with credible green electricity products - a mission statement that unites HAMBURG ENERGIE and Grüner Strom Label e.V.. Therefore, since January 1, 2021, all available green electricity tariffs of the municipal energy provider on the Elbe have been awarded the Green Electricity Label.
The sponsors of the first eco-electricity label in Germany are the major environmental associations Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU), Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND) and Deutscher Naturschutzring (DNR). The six initiators also include the energy transition association EUROSOLAR, VERBRAUCHER INITIATIVE e.V. and the peace organization International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW).
They are all united by the vision of a 100 % renewable energy supply in all sectors and at all levels. The energy supply should be nature-compatible, decentralized, citizen-oriented, public welfare-oriented, fair and pollutant-free. The core criterion of the eco-label of the environmental associations is the promotion of new energy transition projects, such as photovoltaic plants, wind energy plants as well as energy efficiency, e-mobility or educational measures. So far, more than 1,400 energy transition projects have been co-financed and implemented nationwide with over 75 million euros.
"The energy turnaround can only succeed if the expansion of renewables continues - the promotion logic of the Green Electricity Label makes a significant contribution to this. Every green electricity product certified with the green electricity label of the environmental associations guarantees: A fixed amount per kilowatt hour of green electricity is invested in new energy transition projects within two years," explains Dietmar Oeliger, chairman of Grüner Strom Label e.V. "I am looking forward to exciting projects in the Hanseatic city!" concludes Oeliger, who represents NABU on the association's board.
Grüner Strom Label e.V. has been continuously developing the criteria for credible green electricity since 1998. In doing so, the different perspectives of the supporting associations are taken into account. In this way, the Grüner Strom-Label represents the diversity of civil society involvement in Germany. In addition, independent players such as Ökotest, Verbraucherzentrale or utopia.de regularly confirm the high quality of the Green Electricity criteria.
"With the Green Electricity label, our customers can be sure that they will only find tariffs with real environmental benefits. More and more people are attaching importance to genuine green electricity and want to actively support the energy transition. We ourselves are proud that our long-standing commitment to the energy transition has now been confirmed by Germany's most demanding green electricity label," reports Michael Prinz, Managing Director of Hamburg Energie GmbH.
To date, HAMBURG ENERGIE has worked hard to promote the energy transition in Hamburg and is now one of the largest wind and solar power producers in the Hanseatic city. Now the Green Electricity seal of approval officially confirms this commitment. The label guarantees that the company will continue to invest in energy transition projects. For example, HAMBURG ENERGIE is working on new climate-friendly solutions for supplying heat to neighborhoods and is planning to build a deep geothermal plant in the Hanseatic city for the first time.

About Grüner Strom Label e.V.
The Grüner Strom Label e.V. certifies green energy products. The association awards two seals of approval for this purpose: the Grüner Strom-Label for green electricity with added value and the Grünes Gas-Label for environmentally compatible biogas. The association is backed by non-profit environmental and consumer associations and peace organizations, including NABU, BUND, EUROSOLAR and the Verbraucher Initiative. Grüner Storm-Label or Grünes Gas-Label are the only seals of approval for green electricity and biogas in Germany that are supported and recommended by leading environmental associations. www.gruenerstromlabel.de
