LOCOMORE BRINGS REAL GREEN ELECTRICITY TO THE RAILWAYS

For the first time, genuine green electricity in long-distance rail transport, certified with the Grüner Strom-Label / Alternative rail provider Locomore runs with green electricity from NATURSTROM AG Bonn/Düsseldorf/Berlin, December 09, 2016. With Locomore, a new rail company is launching long-distance transport on December 14. The crowdfunded train runs daily from Stuttgart via Frankfurt to Berlin and back. The long-distance train is powered by green electricity from NATURSTROM AG, certified with the Grüner Strom-Label. This is the first time that green electricity has been used in long-distance rail transport that demonstrably triggers investments in the environmentally compatible expansion of renewable energies and thus also meets the requirements of leading environmental associations.

"It is gratifying to see that even in energy-intensive industries such as rail transport, it is possible to operate with high-quality green electricity. This makes rail travel even more ecologically compatible," explains Dietmar Oeliger, head of transport policy at NABU and board member of Grüner Strom Label e.V. "The regular verification of the green electricity quantities required by Locomore through the Grüner Strom certification not only guarantees that the electricity comes 100 percent from renewable energy sources, but also guarantees investments in energy transition projects that are compatible with nature."

An annual demand of around 8.5 million kilowatt hours is forecast - as much as for around 2,400 single-family homes. For every kilowatt hour of green electricity that NATURSTROM supplies to the rail network for Locomore, the green energy supplier invests a fixed amount in energy transition projects, such as new solar or wind power plants. This is verified annually by Grüner Strom Label e.V.. The association is backed by seven non-profit environmental and consumer associations and peace organizations, including the major environmental associations BUND, NABU and Deutscher Naturschutzring. The Grüner Strom-Label is the only green electricity label in Germany that is supported by leading environmental associations.

"We are the first green power provider to supply genuine, high-quality green power for long-distance trains," says a delighted Oliver Hummel, member of the Management Board at NATURSTROM AG. "Anyone traveling with Locomore between Stuttgart and Berlin is supporting the energy turnaround as an added bonus. The course has been set for an ecological energy future."
