Germany still has a long way to go to achieve its climate targets, but the energy transition is picking up speed. The PV cap has fallen, the coal phase-out has been decided, and for the first time, the amount of electricity from renewable energies is mathematically sufficient to supply Germany only with green electricity for more than half of the year. A not inconsiderable share of this is attributable to the more than 1,400 energy turnaround projects that were financed with Grüner Strom-Label subsidies totaling more than 75 million euros.

Energy providers with green electricity-certified tariffs commit to investing a certain amount per kilowatt hour consumed in energy transition or nature conservation projects. However, these projects are not limited exclusively to Germany, because climate protection is a global task. For example, the green electricity provider NATURSTROM repeatedly supports projects and initiatives around the world.

School lessons with solar power

The teachers at a school in Tanzania are now using the power of the sun for their lessons, as a photovoltaic system was installed on the roof in 2017. The system not only strengthens the independence of the school, but also that of the teachers and students, as for the first time a school-owned printer could be installed, which is now operated with the help of solar power. Before the project was implemented, the school's teachers had to travel all the way to the next town to print teaching materials for a relatively large amount of money. Projects like this not only support the energy transition in the East African country, but also improve educational opportunities and teaching methods.

Photovoltaic system secures health care

Energy transition projects also benefit from the funding. In 2018, a photovoltaic system was installed on a children's hospital in the Bolivian city of La Paz in cooperation with the Arco Iris Foundation. The Arco Iris hospital was founded in 2001 with the aim of providing medical care for children and young people and is now one of the best hospitals in La Paz. It also fulfills an important social function, as street children and destitute families can receive free treatment. The installation of the photovoltaic system and the implementation of energy efficiency measures have reduced the hospital's expenses. This now leaves more money for the health care of children and young people in La Paz.

In countries such as Bolivia and Tanzania, such lighthouse projects increase the pressure on governments to improve framework conditions for decentralized energy supply and thus promote the expansion of renewable energies. Through the guaranteed investments of the label holders, Grüner Strom Label e.V. promotes projects in these countries.

How a noise barrier becomes a solar plant and drives the energy transition

The "SeeEnergie ÖkostromHeimat" green electricity tariff from Stadtwerke Konstanz was awarded the Grüner Strom-Label. The electricity comes from photovoltaic systems that were built on a noise barrier. The environmental associations' seal of approval obliges energy providers to invest in the energy transition. For example, the photovoltaic system on the roof of the inclusive Seehörnle Hotel run by Caritas was co-financed.

Transformation of Münster's heating networks - large-scale heat pump in the port power plant

A new energy transition project is being realized in Münster: The large heat pump in the port power plant will be an important component of the heat transition. As the system meets the strict criteria of the Grüner Strom-Label, it is eligible for subsidies. The heat pump will be climate-neutral thanks to its operation with green electricity-certified green power.
